The Tuesday Register - Update

Some people who come on Tuesdays have asked why we have the Tuesday Register, and what happens to the information you give us.

There are a couple of reasons we ask for this information—some to do with the Club and some to do with the Royal Yachting Assn of which the Club is an affiliated member.

IMGP2797
Junior Training, the other way up.
Obviously the Club needs the name of everyone who comes to the training sessions; your email address helps us keep in touch with you if and when necessary; the Medical/Consent form let’s us know if there are any existing medical conditions which we need to be aware of before you sail with us; this also asks for permission to use any photos/videos we may take, in our website, marketing etc, and for a contact number which we can use in case of an emergency affecting you.

The RYA asks for monitoring information from all clubs affiliated to them— numbers of adults/juniors; sailing or accompanying people who are sailing— usually parents bringing children.
This feeds into a regional picture of sailing, and then into a national picture. From this information, and from discussions they have with us throughout the year, the RYA aims to raise funding which then filters back down to regions and clubs like ours. Such funding also supports RYA staff, who meet us, represent us, run training courses and for YSC, will be advising on our lease negotiations (currently underway with Leeds City Council). So, every week when people have signed in, we enter numbers in a spreadsheet and from this spreadsheet, we complete the monitoring forms the RYA needs— we only send them numbers—they don’t require names, email addresses or medical information. We also use this information in grant applications we make ourselves—eg for the Sports Lottery grant we got for the new Herons. We keep the registers and consent forms in a locked cupboard, and at the end of the season we burn or shred them.

We regularly review the information we need to ask for— 2 examples :

  • perhaps we should have medical information/consent to use photos emergency contacts for all club members, not just people coming on Tuesdays;
  • now people are signing up online for the Tuesdays, this includes their email address, so perhaps we don’t need to ask you to write it out when you first come.

Over the winter we look at things like this, as well as how we might tweak or revise training programmes and other Club procedures. If you want to know more about any of the above, you can talk to Neil McInnes (Training Coach), Andrew Cowling (Club Secretary and trainer); Louise Harding (who fills in all the RYA forms—thank you, Louise!!)

Autumn message from the YSC Rear Commodore

IMGP4159
Tony Sailing during the N12 Open
Well, what a year! I can’t believe it is nearly over. At last the gods granted us a summer - a little blustery at the start of the season, but once May and June arrived the sun popped out and the rain stayed away. Whilst writing this after the first races of October, summer has finally left, and with a nip in the air, I think autumn has landed.

So what’s happened this year then? I guess it started on New Year’s Day which feels like ages ago. I understand it was a little windy and cold. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it as I was on holiday but understand the whisky went down well and fun was had by all.

Hardly a minute after that there were social evenings, Dennis’ walk and the Laying Up Supper, which I covered in the last edition of Ahoy. Don’t forget to book for the Laying Up Supper on 18 January 2015 - places limited, so hurry, hurry, hurry!

2014-08 Lakes 023
The YSC Fleet on exercise in the Lakes
The sailing season got underway without too much trouble. The Saturday and Sunday race series started well, shortly followed by the Wednesday evening race series.

Training also started with an even longer calendar than last year, the More Sailing More Often training programme, designed to encourage new members to bridge the gap between starting sailing and racing is still running as I write. The sessions have been just as popular as ever. Well done to Neil and his team. Thanks to Bob Dootson, and all who helped, for starting the social sailing on those summery Saturday evenings. The idea was to give members a chance to sail safely outside of the pressured race and training environment. I for one think these sessions are a brilliant idea. Hard work from Bob also managed to land the Club a grant of £10,000 from Sport England, which we quickly changed into two brand new Herons. These are fantastic and are for all to use. Another initiative this year was a trip away organised by yours truly. After much deliberation 24 members, 1 dog, 9 boats, 2 windsurfers and 1 canoe made it to Lake Coniston. After a stormy start to the weekend, which was good for the windsurfers, a small armada of dinghies made it down to the bottom end of the lake. Later at the BBQ we were all treated to a star-filled sky and the odd shooting star. The next day, with tired eyes after the never ending parting from other campers, we ventured to the top of the lake for an ice cream, and how not to anchor your boat. I understand there maybe another trip in May. Watch this space.

On top of this for the first time the club joined most other clubs in the UK and beyond to enter a world record attempt – Bart’s Bash, the world’s biggest ever Barts Bash in memory of Olympian

Andrew Simpson who sadly died in a sailing accident whilst training for the Americas Cup back in 2013. It was some task for YSC to put this together, but thanks largely to Andrew Cowling we pulled it off with 28 entries in all. By the time this goes to print the full results should be completed.

Commodore’s Weekend was blessed once again with fine weather. Due to the Tour de France, I decided to bring the weekend forward to avoid a clash. I think this impacted on numbers a little and numbers were down a little. However all those who attended had a great time and if mast climbing becomes an Olympic sport there will be a gold post box on Yeadon High Street.

There is loads more to write about Open Days etc but I think I will leave it at that. Thank you for putting up with me; it has been a privilege to be the Club’s Commodore in 2014. I’m sure over the months I have missed thanking some of the great people who work so hard to make the Club the special place it is – my apologies to you.

Please have a good Christmas and a New Year.

Streaker and Solo Open Meeting at Yeadon

Despite a very low wind forecast and a clash with the rescheduled Streaker Nationals a fleet of nine local and visiting helms arrived to compete for the open meetings and were greeted by a fitful breeze which almost died then shifted 180 degrees during the briefing making the race management somewhat tricky!

Fortunately as the briefing ended the breeze filled in slightly and switched back to the forecast direction and the decision was made with all concerned to sail both fleets together and to start straight away before the breeze died again.

The breeze held and after a clean start Streaker 1616 Peter Kitchen took up the lead closely followed by Solo’s 4163 Tony Langley and 5413 Andy Cheetham with the rest of the fleet in close pursuit.  The wind however died again and the fleet bunched up, with places changing constantly as what breeze they had shifted in direction every few minutes.  At the end of the race it was the same three boats but the order changed almost on the last mark with Andy Cheetham Solo 5413 taking the win from local hero Tony Langley and Peter Kitchen St 1616 all three finishing within three boat lengths after racing for almost an hour the second Streaker was Richard Long in 1625.

After an excellent lunch and a course change to suit a slightly increased breeze the fleet again made a clean start this time with a new leader Helen Voisey in Streaker 1676 (in her first open meeting away from her home club Ripon) being chased by Peter Streaker 1616.  Despite being over taken by Peter who led in the middle part of the race Helen fought back to take the victory from Peter with Richard Long Streaker 1625 in third place.  In the Solo fleet Tony Langley having made what seemed to be a bad start had managed to recover and was first Solo at the first mark a position he held until almost the last mark when Andy got through once again to take the fleet win and the open meeting.

Race three saw a further course change and only one Solo taking to the water however the Streaker results were still wide open and all boats were on the line and raring to go.  Again the fleet got off to a good start and this time it was Paul Metcalfe who took up the lead, a position he held for two laps before being overhauled by Peter and then Helen.  Despite the wind having shifted to almost remove the windward leg Helen managed to get through into the lead only to lose it again in the closing stages and come in a very close second.  Gavin Gulliver-Goodall Solo 3986 sailed a solid race finishing 1st Solo moving him up to 2nd overall.

National 12 Open Meeting Yeadon Sailing Club Sun 5th October 2014

National 12s at Yeadon : 5/10/2014

Light and changeable south-easterly winds greeted the helms and crews of a dozen National 12’s who gathered at Yeadon Tarn last Sunday.  Three trophies were being raced for – the local Tarn Trophy, the ANYEC Trophy and the ‘Witchcraft Bailer’ Trophy for Vintage boats.

The fleet was dominated by vintage, clinker-built boats, eight in all, ranging from Ian and Margaret Purkis’ Proctor Mk4A ‘My Little Margie’ built in 1957, through to a modified Starfish design ‘Starbuck’ built in 1966 and recently renovated by local sailmaker and ex-Merlin sailor, Peter Robinson. In addition there were three Admiral’s Cup designs – a Crusader, Crusader 88, and a Baggy Trousers with one double-bottomed Feeling Foolish design, ‘Out of the Blue’, making up the numbers.

Race 1: After a clean start, the fleet soon found themselves rafted up at the windward mark as the wind shifted more easterly and the onshore trees cast a large wind-shadow over the south-east corner of the Tarn. Eventually three boats managed to break clear - Philip David and Emma Hampshire in their Feeling Foolish N3499, Howard Chadwick and Helen Nicholson in their vintage Starfish ‘Triada’ N2266 and John and Alison Cheetham in their Crusader N3209 ‘Rebel’.  Despite several challenges to the leaders from Brian Kitchen and Olivia Stodiek in their beautifully restored Chimp N1657 ‘Just Lucky’, the leading three held their positions to finish in that order.

Race 2: Saw Chadwick and Nicholson last across the line – an unusual position for them.  However they quickly made their way through the fleet which again suffered another major traffic jam at the windward mark.  After much place-changing it was David and Hampshire who again took the gun, closely followed by Team Cheetham with the vintage Starfish ‘Triada’, close behind. Unfortunately, the Feeling Foolish had been involved in an incident on the water which led to them having to retire, which meant that Angus Beyts and his local crew Gail Kaye, sailing N1833 ‘Water Nymph’ a Mark 9 design from 1960, who had sailed an exceptional race, made it into third place.

Race 3: With a further change of course to try and avoid the wind shadows now affecting the north-east corner of the lake, the fleet was once again led by the same three 12’s only this time two other vintage boats – both Starfish designs – N2335 ‘Saskia’, sailed by Tim Gatti and Gill Bilton and N2345 ‘Bakewell Tart’ with Brian Herring and Ros Stevenson, joined the leading group and built up an unassailable lead over the remainder of the fleet.

Figure 4 Modern and Vintage designs battle it out at Yeadon N12 Open Meeting

At the prizegiving, Philip David and Emma Hampshire were awarded both the Tarn Trophy and the ANEYC Trophy as overall winners of the event. John and Alison Cheetham were second overall and Howard Chadwick and Helen Nicholson finished in third place and were first Vintage boat.  They were also awarded the Witchcraft Bailer Trophy for their overall win in the 2014 Vintage Series.

Many thanks to all at Yeadon Sailing Club for hosting an extremely well-run event despite the tricky weather conditions and to all those competitors – some travelling from as far away as Scotland and Bristol, who took part. We look forward to seeing you back again in 2015.
