Beginner Start Racing and Intermediate Race Training 2017

We are on the run in to the end of the Tuesday Night Training sessions for this season with the last session being on Tuesday 8th August. The last few weeks have been great as everybody is starting to gain confidence and their ‘Sea Legs’ and enjoying being out on the water.


Our next set of training sessions are designed to take the basics of sailing that you have learnt and put them into context and we are running a Start Racing Course for those new to sailing and an Intermediate Race Training Course for those who have done a bit more. These sessions start in September. We hope to 'bottle' some enthusiasm and good stuff from the recent Tuesdays and keep you all sailing with these sessions through September and into October.

These Race Training sessions will start on the 9th September and will run for 5 Saturday sessions, these being; 9th, 16th, 30th September, then 7th and 21st October. We are also hoping to get everybody out on Sunday 17th September on the Tarn to join in with the Bart’s Bash race (@ 2.30pm) which is the largest sailing race in the world.


Each session starts at 11.30am, changed and rigged, (on the water at 12.00), and runs until 2.00.This allows time for those of you who feel up to joining in with the Club Races to have a quick break before the first Club race starts at 2.30. These training sessions will incorporate races for the Junior and Beginner Race Series as well.

The basic requirements to join in with the sessions are that people have access to a boat (either their own or a Club boat), and you that you can rig and launch the boat, sail a basic triangle course, recover and derig it afterwards and want to learn the basics of racing.


These sessions have been developed for people to apply their newly developed sailing skills into some more focused activities. This will further improve your sailing skills and competence and to introduce you to racing. These sessions will follow the RYA Start Racing syllabuses.

Kick Start Training 2017

Struggling to remember the difference between a tack or a gybe, or how far you can tip the boat over in a roll tack, or even where you put everything the last time you sailed last Season ?????????

Well the Kick Start Sessions are just for you then!

These are informal sessions designed to get all members that can sail (both improvers and racers) back on the water with some general training so you can practice your key skills and to regain that sailing habit. It also gives you the chance to sort your boat out and get it out on the water after the winter layoff, or just get sailing again by borrowing a Club Boat.

There are 4 sessions in total, two sessions on Tuesdays, April 4th and 11th, starting at 6.30pm (on the water at 7.00) and two sessions on Saturdays, April 15th and 22nd, starting at 11.30 (on the water at 12.00).


We will be chasing the light on the two evening sessions so we will all have to be fairly efficient to make best use of the time before the sun sets!
Finally we have had some nice weather recently during the day but it does drops cold on an evening so please make sure you are wearing plenty to stay warm.


Then the following Tuesday (18th April) the normal Tuesday Night Training commence
This the main stay of the Club training and these sessions are designed to boost everybody’s confidence and their competence on the water and to introduce people to the joys of sailing
The Sessions start at 6.30pm to get boats ready for the briefing at 7.00pm finishing about 8.30pm and these sessions will run every Tuesday from the 18th April until the 8th August.

Enthusiastic and Intrepid Sailors Brave the Cold for a New Years Day Sail

It was lovely to see an enthusiastic and intrepid group of YSC sailors welcome in the New Year on a blustery tarn to race for the Commodores bottle! It certainly blew away any 2016 blues and set a high standard for the 2017's season.  

The new Commodore roared home and in true tradition Andrew shared out the bottle between the friends and members who had gathered to support the racers and organise the fuddle. We all raised a toast to the New Year. 

Big thanks to Tony and to John S for OODing. Looking forward to the Tarns Yarns on January Tuesday 10th and the Laying up Supper on January 28th.

Winter Walk Start Announced - Hebers Ghyll in Ilkley, 5th Feb 11am

Jo and Dennis will once again be organising  the annual winter hike, with an open invitation to club members and your family and friends to come and join us. The usual arrangements will prevail, with a walk of about 7 miles, starting at 11am.

National 12 Open Meeting Sunday 2nd October – Yeadon Sailing Club

For the National 12 Open Meeting at Yeadon the weather was sunny and warm with light winds which were a little bit more consistent than the wind we had at the Ripon SC N12 Open the day before. For those of you who know Yeadon will realise that still meant the wind could, and would, be all over the place at times.

The first race set the tone for the rest of the day with Philip David & Emma Hampshire being harassed by the rest of the fleet but eventually coming out on top by the end of the race. John & Alison Cheetham came through in second but behind them all sorts of action was occurring on the last lap. Patrick Hamilton & Gail Kaye managed to park up at Mark No 4 allowing Tim Hampshire & Beth Miller and Brian Herring & Ros Stevenson to close and then get through, closely followed by Neil & Rachel McInnes. Patrick & Gail must have caught a big fish as they struggled to get back up to speed, meanwhile Tim & Beth and Brian & Ros stayed overlapped for the remaining legs of the course with Brian & Ros getting the inside line at the last mark to take third place.

After a pleasant lunch it was great to see Howard and Sarah Chadwick who popped in to see how we were all doing and to enjoy the October sunshine.


After lunch the wind seemed to ease off, this made the first couple of laps of the second race a bit of a hunt for the wind before it became more consistent once more. Philip & Emma again made the best of it with John & Alison second with Tim & Beth coming third.

For Race 3 Tim & Beth got the best of the start and lead the fleet for the first couple of laps with the rest snapping at their heels. The lead changed a number of times in the middle of the race before eventually Philip & Emma took the win to give them the perfect scoreline, from John & Alison in second and Patrick & Gail were back up to speed and came third.

With 3 wins out of 3 Philip and Emma took the Tarn Trophy for 2016 but all the competitors seemed to have a great day.

A special mention must be made to congratulate young Christopher Hampshire who helmed Gavin Goodhall’s Twelve at both the Ripon and Yeadon Opens over the weekend in quite tricky, light wind conditions – Well Done Christopher !

At the Prizegiving Philip thanked Yeadon for hosting a good event and the OODs Tony and Paul and their Team who kept everything running smoothly and made best use of the Tarn in the conditions, and to Gren, Cathy and Margaret who keeping everybody fed and watered. Thanks are also due to Howard Chadwick and Ginger Threads for donating the prizes for the event.

HERON/MIRROR OPEN - SATURDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 2016

Calling all Heron/Mirror Sailors to an Open Meeting to be held at Yeadon Sailing Club on Saturday 24 September 2016.  We would be delighted to welcome as many Heron/Mirror sailors as possible to our Open Meeting,  all visitors to Yeadon Sailing Club are especially welcome.  There will be a briefing at 11.00 am followed by three races at 11.30 am, 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm with prize giving held at approximately 4.30pm.

£10 per boat with a delicious lunch being available consisting of a choice of soups, roll and butter, choice of puddings with a tea/coffee all for the very reasonable price of £4. Tea/coffee and cake will be served in the afternoon.

There are 4 Herons available for the use of YSC Club Members so please contact Tricia Atkinson if you would like to be assured of a Club boat on the day or just take pot luck and turn up on the day.

Please come and join us for what will hopefully be a great day's sailing.

Beginner Start Racing Training 2016 - Last of our Tuesday Night Training is August 9th

We are on the run in to the end of Tuesdays for this season and the last session is on Tuesday 9th August.

The last couple of weeks have been really good and positive especially as the weather has improved and we have had good numbers out on the water Hopefully we can get most of you competent and confident enough with the basics of sailing to be able to take part in our next set of training sessions which are the Beginner Start Racing sessions in September. We hope to 'bottle' some enthusiasm and good stuff from the recent Tuesdays and keep you all sailing with these sessions into September and October.

These Beginner Start Racing sessions will start on the 3rd September and will run for 6 Saturday sessions , these being ; 3rd, 10th, and 17th September, then 1st, 15th and 22nd October.

Each session starts at 11.30 (on the water at 12.00), and runs until 2.00.This allows time for those of you who feel up to joining in with the Club Races to have a quick break before the first Club race starts at 2.30.

These are on a Saturday evening and they are not training sessions, just a chance to sail and practice your skills in a relaxed environment on a Saturday evenings after the second race is finished at 5.00 until around 7.00 to 7.30 pm.
These sessions run until August  20th, so please bring your boat, or borrow a Club boat, perhaps some food, sail, relax and chill !
