Beginner Start Racing Training 2016 - Last of our Tuesday Night Training is August 9th

We are on the run in to the end of Tuesdays for this season and the last session is on Tuesday 9th August.

The last couple of weeks have been really good and positive especially as the weather has improved and we have had good numbers out on the water Hopefully we can get most of you competent and confident enough with the basics of sailing to be able to take part in our next set of training sessions which are the Beginner Start Racing sessions in September. We hope to 'bottle' some enthusiasm and good stuff from the recent Tuesdays and keep you all sailing with these sessions into September and October.

These Beginner Start Racing sessions will start on the 3rd September and will run for 6 Saturday sessions , these being ; 3rd, 10th, and 17th September, then 1st, 15th and 22nd October.

Each session starts at 11.30 (on the water at 12.00), and runs until 2.00.This allows time for those of you who feel up to joining in with the Club Races to have a quick break before the first Club race starts at 2.30.

The basic requirements to join in with the sessions are that people have access to a boat (either their own or a Club boat), and you can rig, launch, sail a basic triangle course, recover and derig it afterwards and want to learn the basics of racing.

These sessions have been developed for people to apply their newly developed sailing skills into some more focused activities. This will further improve your sailing skills and competence and to introduce you to racing. These sessions will follow the RYA Start Racing syllabus 

If required, for those who have only recently started sailing, we may be able to run some ‘one to one’ tuition to improve your sailing basics as well, please speak to me about that so we can try and sort.

Within these sessions we will incorporate some events to form the Junior Race Series and the new Beginner Race Series

These are on a Saturday evening and they are not training sessions, just a chance to sail and practice your skills in a relaxed environment on a Saturday evenings after the second race is finished at 5.00 until around 7.00 to 7.30 pm.
These sessions run until August  20th, so please bring your boat, or borrow a Club boat, perhaps some food, sail, relax and chill !

Yeadon Sailing Club Open Day Success #PTBO15

Thank you to all those that came down to the 2015 Yeadon Sailing Club Open Day. We had 52 visitors come down to give sailing a go which is fantastic.

Thank you to the club's family of volunteers that ensured that even strong gusts couldn't stop the day being a success.

YSC’s first Open Meeting of the 2015 season started with good winds forecast to get stronger during the day. 10 sailors, including 7 visitors from other Yorkshire and Lancashire Clubs raced hard, giving no quarter.

Race 1 - Sunny, quite warm, moderate SE winds, gusting 2-3

A good start by Adrian Sandilands (UKLA) who had a decent lead from Ian Lees (Scammonden SC) - a lead which was reversed by the second lap.  Charlotte Greenmalem (Leigh & Lawton SC) had a tremendous last two laps, moving from 3rd to take the race at the finish, closely followed by Adrian in 2nd, with Ian Lees in 3rd place.

Over lunch the decision was taken to run Races 2 & 3 back to back with no tea break, so the galley staff could have a sit down for a bit!

Race 2 - stronger SE winds, gusting 3-4

The wind became stronger with plenty of shifts  - typical of Yeadon SC - causing quite a few capsizes. Laura Beardsmore (Yeason SC) came off the water after a difficult recovery, and, determined to race in the third race, stood dripping around the clubroom for 45 mins until it was time to go back out again.

Meanwhile, on the water, Charlotte  was obviously getting used to the shifty Yeadon winds as she sailed away from the rest of the fleet to win her second race.  Also clear of the ‘peloton’ - or rest of the fleet - was Adrian Sandilands, who took second.  There was a hard fight for 3rd place between Ian Lees (Scammonden), Paul Cornish (Scammonden) and Andy Ratcliffe (Rossendale Valley SC).  Ian Lees finally took the honours of 3rd place.

Race 3 - winds gusting 4

After a tiring second race, the fleet went straight into the third race without a break. Undeterred, Charlotte continued to sail brilliantly in even more shifty winds, again getting ahead of the fleet to win the third race.  Adrian was beating Ian Lees, until he capsized giving Ian the chance of getting ahead, so Ian took 2nd place, with Adrian 3rd. The remaining fleet trailed in for the minor places, very tired, glad to finish.

We were delighted that Jenni won the Laser Radial Special Award.  After a distinguished career as a Topper sailor, Jenni has been sailing a Laser for just over 2 weeks - this is her first Open Meeting.  Obviously a sailor to watch in the future!

Yeadon SC – Laser Open Meeting Sunday May 11th 2014(Northern GP Series)

The third meeting in the Northern Area Laser GP for 2014 took place at Yeadon SC. Competitors were greeted with blustery conditions and a constantly shifting wind, not unusual for Yeadon but with gusts regularly reaching up to force 4/5, this was high for the open event! A total of 6 visitors joined the 8 home boats, for what would be a highly eventful day of racing, and which would see the fleet face a high rate of attrition with the final race having only 5 finishers.

The first race got under way with a clean start with gusts of 20 knots. Three retirements occurred during the first race due to gear failure – an indication of what was to come. The lead group pulled away with Ian Jones from Dovestone SC taking a clear win. The fight for second and third positions was not decided until the last mark before the finish when a dramatic shifting gust capsized all three boats – the first to right their boat would be rewarded with second place. This was achieved by Ian Lees of Scammonden SC, quickly followed by Isaac Marsh, also of Scammonden SC and who was sailing his radial. Luke Cowling was the first finisher for the home club, coming in fourth. 

After lunch, the course was altered in the hope that this would reduce the multiple capsizes which took place in Race 1. This was not to be the case, resulting in more retirements. Nevertheless, the nine finishers enjoyed a close and ever-changing order throughout the forty minute race. 

From the start, Luke Cowling, Ian Jones, and Graham MacWhirter took an early lead, pulling away from Ian Lees and Isaac Marsh. Capsizes were the order of the day for the rest of the fleet although the lead group was not devoid of such mishaps with Ian Jones coming unstuck, allowing Graham to capitalise. As the race progressed, Luke and Ian Jones built a strong lead – it would be down to these two as to who would take the win. Luke was holding a strong position as lead boat until an unfortunate gust caught him unawares, giving the lead back to Ian Jones, who would go on to consolidate his position to win race 2. Luke came in second with Ian Lees finishing third. The gusts and shifty wind continued to torment the fleet and it would be those sailors who managed to stay upright who would reap the benefit. Andy Ratcliffe was one such competitor who progressed well through the fleet to eventually finish the race in fourth place.   

The final race of the day saw a reduced fleet of seven sailors battling it out for race honours. Luke took another excellent start earning him a quick lead over Ian Lees. Unfortunately, with a massive wind shift, came two capsizes for Luke in fairly quick succession, dropping him down to 5th and an eventual retirement. Isaac in his Radial took over the lead, hotly pursued by Ian Lees. Ian would eventually overtake Isaac and with only five boats remaining in the race, the outcome was far less-dramatic than the previous three races: Ian Lees winning race 3, Isaac coming in second and Graham MacWhirter finishing third.

Overall Ian Jones was first having secured two wins. Ian Lees came in second with Isaac Marsh third and first radial. The open event was well-received and in what were very tough sailing conditions, the OOD and his team worked admirably in setting a good course and ensuring a professional and safe event was undertaken. Also, last but certainly not least, thanks goes to the catering team and their excellent job in keeping the sailors full of sustenance!

Open Day at Yeadon Sailing Club, Sat May 17th

On Saturday 17th May, Yeadon Sailing Club opens its doors to the public to give you a chance to have a go at sailing.

If you fancy joining our sailing club, whether you are complete novice, an experienced sailor, a parent wishing to get the family into this exciting sport or just want to get involved in a busy club. Well why not give our open day a go. It is free we will be going through what the club is all about and giving you an opportunity to sail in one of our many club boats so please bring suitable clothing and a spare set just in case. We will fit you out with a buoyancy aid. There will be free refreshments tea & coffee etc. It all starts at 10am and continues until 2ish depending on numbers but do feel free to turn up when you can.

If you are already a member and know anyone who may be interested then please spread the word. Any members who would like to help out on the day that would be greatly appreciated.

Online Learning at Yeadon Sailing Club

Yeadon Sailing Club has undertaken a Tuesday night training series for many years and it has always been a core activity in enhancing the skills of its members, but also in attracting new members and promoting the amazing sport of Sailing. Yeadon's water size and location make it an excellent and safe place to learn and race at a great club standard and has been part of the community since 1928.

Tuesday nights are jam packed and very busy events with 30 attendees on average and covering all the practical and theoretical topics in a night is a difficult task, so were looking for a way to make better use of the time available. In addition, YSC wanted to help retain the attention of the training members by engaging them during the week between sailing session to help with skills and member retention.

In 2013 YSC started using an Online Learning Tool called Edmodo. Edmodo can be roughly described as a Facebook for learning. Because it allowed us to build a closed social network focused on Sailing Training at Yeadon, the training team were confident that members could learn on-line safely. There were many positives to Edmodo such as the closed network, library for resources and quiz tools. But it lacked a 'flow' like a course and was it wasn't very intuitive to use and find learning materials. Mainly as it has been built as a tool for the American education system.

Eliademy featuring an RYA YouTube video

This year YSC is trialling Eliademy instead, this is a public or closed by invite, online classroom. The advantages about Eliademy are that the links for joining do not change on a bi weekly basis, enabling you to make them available within your printed training materials and welcome booklets. 

It also allows you to build a structure that can follow and support your practical training activities. You can provide your members a link to the course and they can easily signup and learn. 

You can monitor their progress by viewing the results of the short quizzes. Although the quiz tools are not as sophisticated as Edmodo, the Multi Choice question type is easier to use and set-up, and allows you to embed more video and image content. All content is managed via basic and easy to use editing tools which allow those with HTML skills the ability to add further innovative information should they want to. The tool is therefore a very flexible way of covering sailing theory.

Both Eliademy and Edmodo have Apps to access content on Tablets or Smartphones, although Edmodo's is a little more advanced. Perhaps the simpler nature of Eliademy is one of it's appeals although it does allow for feedback so learning enthusiasts like me can keep suggesting new ideas.

Neither tool would be any use without the fantastic video materials that are available on YouTube and elsewhere on the web, mostly provided by the RYA. Eliademy and our Tuesday training sessions help to give these freely available learning materials context and improve the learning journey. We would always advise purchasing RYA's publications which are excellent ways of learning the skills associated with sailing.

Training at Yeadon Sailing Club

We have big plans for Eliademy at Yeadon and hope that tools like this, along with a well organised and well run practical training programme conducted by volunteers, will serve to enhance the club, its members, their skills and help promote sailing.

We will be trialling Eliademy throughout the year and look forward to seeing our members progress through the beginners programme and then on to becoming racing club members.
