Tuesday Night Training and Have a Go Sessions go from strength to strength

Tuesday Night Training and Have a Go Sessions are proving to be as popular as ever. This week Andrew taught trainees and newbies to tack and gybe with shore drills and on the water practise. Next week Tim plans to help you improve this and depending on conditions look at coming along side a boat.

If you have yet to give sailing a try then why not come along. Have a Go sessions are running until August 14th on Tuesdays from 7pm. Don't forget also that if you want to formalise your training then speak to the Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre (RYA Training Centre) next door, they are offering RYA Level 1 and 2 courses until September.

Laser Open Day 13th of May 2012

Conditions: clear sky, south-westerly wind, Force 4

but gusting 5/6.

 

Six local boats and 2 visitors competed.

Race 1. Nathan Poulton started as he meant to go on, and showed everyone a clean pair of heels. Mick Bower exhibited much promise early on, but the heavy weather decimated the field, allowing the other visitor, Darren Nield, to take 2nd place, with our own up and coming junior, Luke Cowling a creditable 3rd. Our ubiquitous veteran, David Statman, survived the carnage.

Race 2. Sky now cloudy, gusts moving in direction. Darren got off to a good start, hotly pursued by Luke. Nathan caught up and joined in what became a thrilling encounter, although the two more experienced sailors’ gradually increased their speed to an unassailable lead. The wind took further toll of the contestants. Darren held his lead, and Luke arrived a worthy 3rd.

Race 3. By now, the more mature sailors had had enough, and only 4 boats took to the water. Darren took the lead, but his success was short lived, when he engineered a disastrous capsize and saw Nathan disappear into the distance. This left Mick to take 2nd place as both Darren and Luke retired from the race.

The spectators enjoyed the event immensely!

Free Tickets to meet Shirley Robertson - Olympic Gold Medalist

Yeadon Sailing Club are pleased to annouce we have 10 free tickets for an event this Wednesday to meet Olypic Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson.

The Event will be held at Clive Brook Volvo in Bradford on Wednesday 16th 18.30 to 20.00pm, there will be food and an excellent opportunity to meet an Olympic star and TV Presenter.

To claim a ticket, please email tdburnett@hotmail.com by 12noon tomorrow (15/05/12) stating who you are and how many tickets you wish to have. Due to ony having a few tickets we'll have to say the maximum is two per household.Tickets will be issued on a first come first served basis.

Open Day May 12th Yeadon Sailing Club

On Saturday 12th May, Yeadon Sailing Club opens its doors to the public to give you a chance to have a go at sailing.

All you need to bring is a rain coat and old trainers. No experience necessary, our members will take you out on the tarn in one of our club sail boats.

The open day runs from 10.30 until 2.30pm, tea and coffee will be available and all other equipment will be provided. Dress for the weather conditions.

At 2pm YSC will be presented with our hard earned Volvo Champion Club status. This recognises our investment in the helping juniors sail. If you are bringing children along to the open day then we ask that they are aged 8 and over, and can follow instructions and fit into our buoyancy aids

Adult Race Training

A northerly 4 was blowing straight down the tarn, it was cold and raining – Lovely !
Plans for the day were rapidly changed to suit the conditions. The attending members didn’t look too enthusiastic, others decided at home it wasn't for them !. The planned sessions on Starting, Rules and Extreme Sailing were revised – Starting and Rules were extended into shore based session whereas it looked like Luke would have suitable conditions for his Extreme Sailing session !

Andrew, Luke and John lead a good discussion on the main rules for when two boats meet and we all played with Picos on the grass looking at ‘mark room’.

 Jo and John went through all the things you have to consider when starting a race and took everybody outside on the grass again and we looked at lines and transits.

By this point we had talked lots and it seemed time finally to brave the conditions. Luke set a Laser up on its side in the shelter of the Club and went through what sail controls actually did and how much to pull on for the conditions (which was more than most people thought !). The group still didn’t seem keen but the Coaches decided to go for it so two Picos, a Topper, a Heron and the Wanderer were launched. Once on the water the conditions were found to be strong but due to the Northerly direction the wind was reasonably consistent. Everybody had a good sail around in the conditions with some people even trying capsizing ! Andrew got some video of the sailing that was then used to discuss technique in the final debrief.

At the end everybody seemed to have a good day and learnt lots despite the conditions and thanks are due to Andrew, Luke, John, John and Jo for leading some really interesting sessions.

Adult Race Training Day

This Saturday (28th April) it is a race training day for the adult sailors at the Club

Come along and improve your sailing, this day will be aimed for all. We propose to split you into a number of different groups based on type of boats and experience level. Whether you are new to racing or an experienced racer, practice makes perfect!

The new Club Coaches have developed training sessions on Starting, Rules and Extreme Sailing !

so come down and see what is going on.

Please be down and get your boats ready for 11.00 and we plan to go on 'till 17.00 so bring your lunch with you !

There will be no Club Racing on that day

Tuesday Night Training starts this week

The main stay of training at the Club – Tuesday Nights start this Tuesday (the 24^th April).

Please be down changed, signed in and ready for 7.00pm.  

You'll need a change of clothing, shoes that can get wet and a wind or water proof jacket (and trousers) to stop you getting cold. If you don't have your owe bouyancy aid don't worry we have ones you can borrow.

These sessions are great for building up your sailing confidence whether you are participant or a helper and they are a great way of getting to know other Club members. If you want get involved with the helping side of Tuesdays please speak to Neil or Glenis, the more help the merrier !
